transient states
transient states - statement, 2014
The photographic process is one that takes me through various ranges of the emotional spectrum. As with any artistic endeavor, it varies depending on events happening in life, accompanied by related feelings and thoughts. Without even realizing it, I photograph almost everyday, creating little moments that resonate with my inner experience. Moments that are happening, but have yet to be processed. The digital files usually wind up stored away into a hard drive for some time before being given the opportunity to be considered ‘worthwhile.’ The spaces between, usually filled with the up-to-now inevitable brain chatter, question the quality and validity of the images, and the entire process as a whole. Symbolic of the many moments, experiences, flickers of possibility, and glimpses into layers of consciousness that often go ignored or unnoticed, the creative process is one of growth.
A simple requirement for composing this series was to search hard drives for images created within the past year, while observing patterns and themes occurring in my personal life. Transformation, development, transitions, endings, and beginnings called out from within the photographs. Clearing out the old to create space for the new, coming full circle, and the completion of cycles were all part of my life experience throughout the year and it is evident in this collection.
