pachamama: ella es la medicina

Pachamama is Mother Earth. She is the one who nourishes and supports us as we experience life on this planet. This video was created in 2022 from a compilation of 27 x 22-second recordings of moments in nature. During the pandemic when the world was locked indoors, I chose to wander alone in nature to receive her medicine and honor her beauty. There was so much serenity and the recordings started as little fragments of memory for myself to watch upon my return indoors, to the city life- masked, chaotic, fearful during those times. The forests, rivers, oceans, swamps, and sunshine were all so welcoming. A reminder of what has always been. What we most need to heal, on all levels, is to be in connection. To give thanks. To protect nature at all costs. The videos are accompanied by audio of a guided meditation and two medicine songs that came through me in 2020. 

The installation, exhibited as part of Sui:Generis, curated by Sophie Bonet and Carol-Anne McFarlane at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale, FL features the video alongside three images from my 2015 series Layered Tensions. Those three images are Meditation I, symbolic of life and the inner state of chaos pre-meditation,  Muladhara Chakra, the root energy center that processes our sense of trust, health, and security, and Svadhisthana Chakra, the sacral energy center that processes our emotional reality. The images represent the densest energies to process as we learn about ourselves and transform our consciousness, while the video honors the medicine.

An interactive piece encouraged visitors to share what they were ready to release inspired by lessons learned during the pandemic, and also affirm who they want to be moving forward. In addition notes that I wrote to myself many years ago as reminders of self-love within my own healing process were printed and displayed on the wall next to the interactive piece. The process of inner world transformation and growth can be long and winding. This installation is a testament to the long-term, sustainable growth that occurs when we dedicate adequate time and energy to the reality of what we are facing internally and choose to heal above all else.

and as you exhale, soften your shoulders away from your ears

gently draw your bellybutton into your spine

reconnect to your inner power

as you inhale feel your lungs expand and lift up through the center of your chest

center yourself in your heart

and as you exhale, soften into that connection

inhale directly into your heart space

envision the landscapes within you in this moment

imagine the waters purify your heart

and give thanks as you exhale

within your mind tell yourself: i am lovable

and i am here to express my Love
